Here, Pablo Picasso’s Rape of the Sabine Women (1963) was displayed to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis. For the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, owners of the painting, this was “Picasso’s last major statement about the horrors of war” which was “perhaps inspired by the Cuban Missile Crisis”, a 13-day stand-off in October 1962 between Cuba and the US during John F. Kennedy’s presidency.
