Barr Jr., head of the Collections Department at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, with remarks and suggestions for the script of Robert Flaherty’s film on Guernica. In his view, the painting is not comparable to Jan van Eyck’s Ghent Altarpiece, and he lists other materials which could be of interest: photographs and studies during and after the execution of the mural. He suggests there should be a selection of works which stress the motifs of the painting, particularly the etching Minotauromachy, and a focus on Pablo Picasso’s symbolism in relation to war and tauromachy, as well as Guernica’s political implications. Moreover, he proposes that the bombing is described not solely as the first aerial attack, but as the greatest twentieth-century prophecy of the horror of aerial warfare. He approves of Flaherty’s suggestion of starting the film with military images of the bombing and refers him to Bill Lieberman, his assistant and the person who, in his view, has studied the painting in greater depth.</p> </div> Alfred H. In his opinion, the interpretation of the painting put forward by the Spanish poet and essayist is inaccurate, since it groups the bull with the slaughtered animals, when, in fact, it represents the role and cruelty of Franco. In Picasso’s own words, which Kahnweiler transcribes in the letter, the interpretation of the painting’s symbols lies in the eyes of the beholder. He also apologises because the book on Juan Gris he sent him has been lost in the post and he assures him he will send another copy.</p> </div> Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler's letter to Alfred H. He informs him that he would like to spotlight works from the last twenty years, taking Guernica as the centerpiece but without disregarding other major works from previous epochs so as to reflect the variety of his work. He also informs him of the desire of museums in Chicago and Philadelphia to host the exhibition when it finishes and New York, and of his intention to work on a new edition of his book Picasso, Fifty Years of His Art (1947), featuring texts on the last ten years of his oeuvre. He emphasises how much he will enjoy working with Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, whom Picasso had entrusted with working on the organisation of the exhibition with the museum, and he expresses his wish to visit the artist if he manages to travel to Europe the following summer.</p> </div><div class="data"> <div class="data__title">Medium: </div> <div class="data__description"> <a href="/en/documentos/tipo-material/institutional-correspondence-5592" hreflang="en">Institutional correspondence</a> </div> </div> <div class="data"> <div class="data__title">Dimensiones: </div> <div class="data__description"> [2] h. </div> </div> <div class="data"> <div class="data__title">Archived in: </div> <div class="data__description"> <a href="/en/documentos/archivo-origen/musee-national-picasso-paris-fonds-picasso-5725" hreflang="en">Musée National Picasso-Paris, Fonds Picasso</a> </div> </div> <div class="data"> <div class="data__title">Reference in the source Archive: </div> <div class="data__description"> 515AP/E/16/14/7(2) </div> </div> <div class="data"> <div class="data__title">Contacto derechos reproducción: </div> <div class="data__description"> <p>Sophie Annoepel-Cabrignac, sophie.annoepel-cabrignac@museepicassoparis.fr</p> </div> </div> <div class="data"> <div class="data__title">Formato: </div> <div class="data__description"> jpg (180 ppp/ 3264 x 2448) </div> </div> <div class="data"> <div class="data__title">Observaciones: </div> <div class="data__description"> <p>Es posible que sea la misma que el registro anterior.</p> </div> </div> <a href="/en/story/key-museum-component" class="tag tag--primary" hreflang="en">A Key Museum Component</a> <a href="/en/documentos/ciudad/new-york-5549" class="tag tag--sm tag--secondary" hreflang="en">New York</a> <a href="/en/ubicacion/museum-modern-art-new-york-5818" class="tag tag--sm tag--secondary" hreflang="en">Museum of Modern Art, New York</a> <a href="/en/agente/alfred-h-barr-jr-5257" class="tag tag--primary" hreflang="en">Alfred H. He also stresses how he received no instruction from Pablo Picasso, except that the woman in the painting holding the lamp represents a certain attitude of Dora Maar’s. Larrea also expresses his disagreement with Anglo-American and European critiques, insisting he has been unable to get past first impressions, and with Jerome Seckler’s (a war veteran and amateur journalist who secured an interview with Picasso in September 1944), whom he accuses of misinterpreting his conversations with the artist, known to mislead his followers, in addition to casting doubt over the questions he posed. He insists that Kahnweiler, a friend and Picasso’s spokesperson, is unaware of his work and expresses an amateur opinion on its subject matter, and he refutes both his arguments and other rationalised interpretations of the painting. He signs off by announcing the Spanish publication of his essay, in which he asserts that everything will remain perfectly elucidated, and asks Barr for photographs, sketches and drawings on Guernica for his work.</p> </div> Juan Larrea's letter to Alfred H.
