How are leftist artists and activists to produce an effective political intervention in the fields of imagery and institutional critique? Radical examples from the past, such as the Art Workers’ Coalition (AWC), the Guerrilla Art Action Group (GAAG), Women Artists in Revolution (W.A.R.), Women Students and Artists for Black Art Liberation (WSABAL), Ad Hoc Women Artists’ Committee and Political Art Documentation and Distribution (PAD/D) are necessary as reference points but not sufficient given pervasive corporate globalisation and the role of digital technologies in contemporary life. Artist Daniel García Andújar employs a variety of strategies, including digital platforms, relational aesthetics and archival activism in attempts to seize possibilities for radical change in the present and to avoid what Walter Benjamin regarded as the misplaced lure of “Left Melancholy”.
