An artist and activist, Faith Ringgold’s American People Series and Black Light Series from the 1960s addressed US racism and sexism. Her contribution to the exhibition People’s Flag Show (November 9 to 14, 1970) at New York’s Judson Memorial Church led to her arrest and prosecution by the authorities. An active member of the Art Workers’ Coalition (AWC), she co-led, with Tom Lloyd, a black coalition within the group, became a member of Women Artists in Revolution (W.A.R), co-founded Women Students and Artists for Black Art Liberation (WASABL) and campaigned with the Ad Hoc Women’s committee for racial and gender equality in museums and galleries.
