The (In)opportunity of Images: Mechanisms for the De-ideologization of Culture in Francoist Spain. Guernica (1937) as a Case Study
Within the framework of the RDI Research Project Faces and Traces in the Art Identities of Francoism and Exile, this work analyses Guernica from the perspective of the depoliticisation process by which the work was incorporated into Spain’s collective imagination. The study examines the mechanisms employed to this end, those which tended to ignore the geopolitical and historical context in which Picasso conceived the work.
