Sidney Janis's letter to Marcele Peterson
The Spanish Refugee Relief Campaign (an aid and fund-raising association for Spanish exiles created during the Spanish Civil War) answers the questions of the Motion Picture Artists’ Committee (an organisation set up to fight fascism and to support the Republican cause) regarding the potential dates for holding the charity exhibition Guernica by Picasso in Hollywood. They inform them of the delivery requirements and other issues related to the show: for instance, the 2,000-dollar advance payment required on account of none of the works being on sale, and the fact that Picasso cannot attend the exhibition’s opening. They also enclose a list of publications which mention the show, and its corresponding dates, and express the interest of the painter, art dealer and collector Galka Scheyer in attending the exhibition, highlighting how this could be invaluable to raising funds.
