Disrespecting the US flag was a criminal offence that led to the removal of Marc Morrel’s installation, which used a facsimile of the flag, from the collective work Collage of Indignation (1967), and the arrest of three artists involved in the People’s Flag Show exhibition at New York’s Judson Memorial Church (November 9 to 14, 1970). Here, George Maciunas, who was a member of Fluxus, used the format of the flag to critique the history of US massacres. Ironically, this work is now housed in MoMA as part of the Gilbert and Lila Silverman Fluxus Collection Gift, a collection archived and curated by Jon Hendricks, an active member of the Guerrilla Art Action Group (GAAG) and one of the “Judson Three”.
