In the series Concealed Spaces, José Manuel Ballester intervenes in emblematic works from across Art History, emptying them of their personages and bringing the background to the fore.

The intervention on Guernica denotes an attempt to bring the events that led to the creation of the work to the present and liken them to current conflicts – in Voids of Guernica the artist challenges the viewer with a setting of desolation and absurdity and makes the terrible consequences of war even more apparent.

Moreover, in his work around Guernica Ballester does not restrict himself to solely removing the figures, but produces instead a sequence of images which records the process of emptying.
