Permanent collection, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía
The transfer of Guernica and its associated works from the Casón del Buen Retiro to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía became an entry in Spain’s political agenda, and held sway in the creation of the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in 1986, with the building fully renovated and its collection formulated at the end of 1988. The movement of the works, inseparable in Picasso’s eyes, occurred on 26 July 1992; however, on this occasion Guernica was not rolled again for conservation reasons. Since then, from its place on the second floor of the Sabatini Building, the painting has been pivotal to the narrative of the museum’s collection.
