Returning Picasso's Guernica to Spain
The article examines the historical and political significance of Pablo Picasso’s Guernica and the debate over its return to Spain after the end of Franco’s regime. The painting is presented as a universal symbol of the struggle against tyranny and as a memorial to the suffering caused by the Spanish Civil War and fascist violence in Europe. Although the restoration of democracy in Spain generated broad international support for its return, the author emphasizes the importance of respecting Picasso’s wishes and ensuring appropriate museological and technical conditions for the painting’s conservation and display, thus advocating responsible stewardship of artistic heritage.
