Picasso and His Time
«Picasso et son temp», interview from the collection Panorama. An interview with Pablo Picasso included in the programme Panorama, broadcast on the French channel ORTF. Asked which of his works or which epoch he would want to stand the test of time, Picasso avoids offering a direct response, pointing out that each work is the result of a moment, circumstance and state. Nevertheless, he immediately mentions Guernica (1937) as an example to illustrate his reply: behind the painting there is war. For Picasso, Guernica, like the rest of his work, cannot be explained through an interpretation of signs or the major or minor success it garners, but rather each work is a page from a large notebook of memories and notes, from his own biography, where the personal is inseparable from the artistic. The interviewer then jokes that he is extraordinarily young.
