Open Hearing
A complement to the Documents 1 archive of the Art Workers’ Coalition (AWC), this publication is a staple-bound collection of AWC statements presented at the group’s meeting held at the School of Visual Arts, New York, on April 10, 1969. Advertised as “an open public hearing […] regarding museum reform” and to establish a programme for the Coalition, in which any and all “art workers” (a term coined by Carl Andre) were invited to “testify”. Open Hearing was set up to be freely circulated and “intended to form a solid basis for a permanent organization designed to represent the best interests of all art workers”. Since the AWC’s attempts to establish open dialogue with MoMA were rebuffed, the group hosted its own widely attended meeting.
