Picasso as a Symbol of National Reconciliation in NO-DO during the Transition to Democracy

Lidia Merás analyses the construction of the figure of Picasso as a national symbol of reconciliation by way of documentaries produced by NO-DO (Newsreels and Documentaries), directed, respectively, by Antonio Mercero and Luis Revenga. Distanced from the artist’s political stance and communist affiliation, these documentaries put forward a re-reading of his life and work as an emblem of discourses of consensus taken into consideration to consolidate democracy.
